September 15, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UK security solutions provider GlobalSign Inc (globalsign.com) has announced that Adobe AIR applications can now be secured by GlobalSign code signing certificates to enhance end-user confidence in applications running on Adobe’s (adobe.com) runtime environment.

Adobe AIR works across operating systems and lets developers combine HTML, Ajax, Flash and Flex technologies in rich Internet applications for deployment on the end-user’s desktop.

According to GlobalSign’s Monday announcement, code signing certificates will enable Adobe AIR developers to virtually “shrink-wrap” their applications, making them tamper-proof and easier to guarantee application authenticity.

“Adobe strongly recommends that developers digitally sign their AIR applications using code signing certificates from a trusted Certification Authority to provide assurances to end users that the application really is from the expected developer,” Adobe AIR senior product manager Luis Polanco said in a statement. “We are pleased that GlobalSign has extended its code signing support to include Adobe AIR.”

Code signing certificates for Adobe AIR applications are available at $229 for unlimited signings for a one or two year period.

Designed to provide a closer connection to customers, GlobalSign said Adobe AIR’s benefits include boosting the productivity of a Web application, extending the reach of web services and enhancing the customer experience by providing deeper desktop integration than browser-based applications.

Support for Adobe AIR is the latest development in GlobalSign’s relationship with Adobe. In 2007, Adobe selected GlobalSign as one of only a handful of Internet security companies authorized to provide products and services using Adobe?s Certified Document Services platform.
