GlobalSign launched its GlobalSign Auto Enrollment Gateway on Wednesday, which integrates with Windows Active Directory to automate management of digital certificates for Windows environments.
Auto Enrollment Gateway connects GlobalSign’s SaaS certificate services and an organization’s Windows environment, simulating aspects of an internal CA while forwarding certificate enrollment requests to GlobalSign.
The Auto Enrollment Gateway software can help reduce the complexity and costs of managing an internal CA, while reducing the risk of system outages, GlobalSign says. Recently, a GlobalSign report found 74 percent of enterprises consider SaaS CA providers to be more secure and trustworthy than an internal CA.
Hackers increasingly target certificates, exploiting known vulnerabilities such as untrusted self-signed certificates, and certificates configured for weak encryption, according to research by Aberdeen Group.
“Most enterprises are not proactively managing the risks associated with these attacks and are unprepared to respond quickly to a compromise,” Derek E. Brink, vice president and research fellow for IT Security at Aberdeen Group said in a statement. “By allowing enterprises to place the operational aspects of managing certificates into the hands of experts, while retaining enterprise control over group policies managed in Active Directory, GlobalSign is aiming to accommodate future growth in the use of certificates while addressing the practical issues of security and trust in an efficient, cost-effective deployment model.”
With Microsoft AD, enterprises can automate PKI management as well as certificate provisioning and deployment across Windows-based networks. This capability, according to GlobalSign, strengthens PKIs while establishing trusted internal and external communications.
“PKI is under attack, and digital certificates have become a common threat vector employed by cybercriminals. However, that doesn’t change the fact that when deployed, managed and used effectively, digital certificates provide the most proven means of defense for enterprise networks,” Lila Kee, GlobalSign chief product and marketing officer said in a statement. “The AEG allows organizations not only to eliminate costly management burdens but also to get full value and maximum security out of their AD investments.”
