(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Digital certificate provider GlobalSign (www.globalsign.com) announced on Tuesday that it has shown the largest increase in the number of SSL Certificates active for the month of February, according to the Netcraft SSL survey.

GlobalSign says it has added 2000 new secure sites a month, making its SSL technology “adopted at a faster rate than the other leading SSL providers” including Symantec, GoDaddy and Comodo.

“February was an unusually interesting month for SSL in the media – with actor and high profile tweeter Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account being hacked, most likely with a Firesheep type traffic sniffer. The hacker left a stark message that Mr. Kutcher should be using the SSL secured versions of such social media sites. With SSL in the headlines, GlobalSign is delighted to see such growth in the deployments of our SSL technology which will mitigate the problem of such traffic sniffers,” Steve Waite, chief marketing officer, GlobalSign said in a statement. “Not only are the number of GlobalSign SSL Certificates implemented on websites increasing, but we are now clearly being considered as a trusted and alternative security provider to the likes of VeriSign [now Symantec].”

According to the press release, between 2008 and 2009 the number of sites secured by GlobalSign “more than doubled and subsequent years have seen strong growth rates of 64 percent and 59 percent.”

GlobalSign plans to provide local language websites and support for several countries, as well as other new product features and enhancements like malware monitoring services and fully automated SSL provisioning.

In February, GlobalSign announced that it now offers the HackAlert malware monitoring solution to identify drive-by downloads.
