(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Building on the successful desktop integration technology of Cloud Desktop, cloud storage client developer Gladinet (www.gladinet.com) has launched a new access platform for EMC Atmos cloud storage, enabling small to medium-sized businesses to attach Atmos storage to their file servers.
According to Gladinet’s Thursday announcement, Cloud Attached File Server (or CloudAFS) lets IT professionals attach EMC Atmos cloud storage to existing IT infrastructure, creating a cost-effective multi-tiered storage solution with low migration impact and faster backup or restore times.
“The EMC Velocity2 Atmos Partner Program demonstrates our commitment to deliver innovative storage solutions that address the growing needs of our partners seeking to leverage cloud infrastructure,” EMC cloud infrastructure group senior vice president Mike Feinberg said in a statement. “We believe there is an opportunity and approach to cloud storage that delivers financial and functional benefits to our partners and the customers they serve.”
The introduction of CloudAFS to Gladinet’s cloud services combines with Gladinet Cloud Desktop to complete its suite of access solutions for EMC Atmos users. By mapping cloud storage as a secure virtual network drive, Gladinet Cloud Desktop enables users to seamlessly and quickly access, aggregate and backup to the cloud directly from Windows Explorer. Cloud Desktop provides direct desktop access to the cloud, and is now fully integrated with EMC Atmos Online Storage, AT&T Synaptic Storage, PEER 1 CloudOne Storage and others.
“The combination of CloudAFS and Cloud Desktop provides a complete access solution for EMC Atmos users,” Gladinet chief executive officer Jerry Huang said in a statement. “Whether the needs involve expanding storage space, replacing tape backup systems, or supporting various local or remote access scenarios, Gladinet has the answer. We are pleased to collaborate with EMC to create products that make their cloud infrastructure more accessible to our joint customer who will experience greater scalability, elasticity and lower costs.”
Customers benefit from being able to use local storage for data fast access, and cloud storage as unlimited pay-as-you-go, second-tier storage. CloudAFS also provides CIFS\NFS access to EMC Atmos storage with Active Directory integration and strong data encryption. Further, CloudAFS’s concurrent licensing model makes it very practical for the group access scenarios.
Last month, Gladinet launched Cloud Desktop 2.0, adding, among other features, AES 128-bit encryption for files stored in the cloud to address the security concerns that are often a deal-breaker when considering migrating to cloud storage.
