Cloud Desktop v1.4.2 officially supports Microsoft's Azure cloud along with the other top cloud storage services.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — With the latest release of Gladinet Cloud Desktop, cloud storage client developer Gladinet (www.gladinet.com) has added the Microsoft Windows Azure platform to the list of cloud storage providers that its service platform supports, meaning that one can map a network drive to Windows Azure Blob Storage and start using it from Windows Explorer.
According to its announcement, Cloud Desktop v1.4.2 has officially added support for Microsoft’s soon-to-be-released cloud to its roster of cloud storage services, which already includes those from Amazon Web Services, AT&T, and Google. The Cloud Desktop platform turns Windows Explorer into a cloud storage portal, making each service appear as a network drive directly accessible from Explorer, providing a unified and familiar interface, instead of having to deal with a patchwork of accounts and interfaces for various cloud services.
“Gladinet’s mission is to provide our customers with what they need at the moment they need it,” Gladinet co-owner Jerry Huang said in a statement. “That’s why we are out in front and ready for the introduction of Windows Azure. Our newest version of Cloud Desktop enables users to mount Azure storage and many other cloud storage services as a virtual drive or folder on their computers.”
Cloud Desktop’s capacity for integrating multiple third-party cloud storage services into individual desktop operating systems lets businesses and individuals drag-and-drop and backup files to Azure and other cloud storage services, and never worry about hard drive malfunctions.
Huang also notes that by allowing users to backup data among a handful of providers, there is little risk that data will ever be lost. “The virtual drives allow for backups to a redundant array of cloud storage so that users do not have to rely on one provider for backup,” he said. “With our interface, users simply drag and drop files and folders from providers such as Amazon S3 to Azure.”
Founded in 2008, Gladinet launched its cloud services to the industry in spring 2009 with the release of Gladinet Cloud Desktop 1.0 and v1.1. In October 2009, it launched Gladinet Cloud Gateway v1.0, which connects individual desktops to cloud storage through a single access point, and allowing one server to support many individual desktops, essentially making it like a virtual file server for Cloud Desktops.
