Gladinet Cloud Desktop lets users access cloud storage just as they would a physical drive.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As browsers continue to be a popular delivery method for cloud services, software developer Gladinet (www.gladinet.com) is offering greater usability and practicality with its new cloud storage client that integrates several popular cloud services directly onto a PC desktop.
According to its Wednesday announcement, Gladinet is the first ubiquitous cloud storage client, featuring open-platform integration with cloud services such as EMC Atmos (labs.emc.com/atmos/), Google Docs (docs.google.com) and Amazon S3 (s3.amazonaws.com).
Gladinet’s flagship product is Cloud Desktop, which provides an Internet-based virtual disk drive that supports a number of cloud-storage providers, and even cross-storage backup across providers to create a redundant array of cloud storage.
“Previously, each cloud storage provider has required a different interface tailored to that particular brand, and this has been highly inconvenient for users,” Gladinet co-owner Jerry Huang said in a statement. “Gladinet’s Cloud Desktop is truly revolutionary because, as a ubiquitous cloud storage client, it provides the same features and interface to many cloud storage providers. Plus, the virtual drives, which are then located on your desktop, allow for backups to a redundant array of cloud storage, eliminating the need to rely upon one provider for backup.”
Gladinet Cloud Desktop originally provided desktop integration with EMC Atmos and EMC Atmos Online storage clouds, but also serves Amazon S3, Google Docs, Google Picasa and Box.net, as well as WebDav providers and FTP providers.
“As a ubiquitous cloud storage client, this technology is an innate problem-solver that also alleviates the common concerns of traditional cloud storage use,” Huang said. “People worry about what will happen with their files should a provider go out of business and disappear, or if they set unreasonable user requirements that prohibit access to the files dedicated on that particular provider’s server. Gladinet Cloud Desktop addresses these issues through its practical, user-friendly solution.”
