(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Chicago-based service provider offering dedicated and virtual compute resources GigeNet (www.gigenet.com) has selected cloud solutions developer ParaScale (www.parascale.com) to provide the cloud storage platform for its compute and storage cloud solution, HIVE (www.vpshive.com).
According to its announcement this week, GigeNet chose ParaScale after thoroughly evaluating competing clustered software technologies.
“We are using ParaScale cloud storage as a strategic part of our virtual private server offering, as well as for backup on the virtual private servers,” GigeNet chief financial officer and storage cloud project lead Ameen Pishdadi said in a statement. “Using standard protocols without the need to recode applications or manually move files, and commodity hardware to create multi-petabyte storage are unique in the market. ParaScale is the best technology choice for us with outstanding service and support, and the partner most qualified to help us deliver a unique service offering.”
Cloud storage software developer ParaScale announced the 2.0 release of its ParaScale Cloud Storage software late last year, introducing a new range of features designed to add support for popular APIs, open standards and commodity hardware, and an enhanced focus on backup and virtual machines. One of the major features of the new version is its focus on the backup and recovery of virtual machines, which will help businesses build confidence in cloud solutions.
Consultancy Tier1 Research (www.t1r.com) data confirms that there is significant opportunity for cloud computing service providers, with the public cloud service market expected to be worth around $300M in 2009, and that number is forecast to double annually for the next three years. Cloud storage accounts for about 40 to 60 percent of this market and customers can adopt it quickly because it doesn’t require many programming tweaks to existing applications.
“Overall, cloud storage is an easier economic sale for the host who can offer up his offering as an alternative to CAPEX spends on storage systems in a tight economy where data growth continues unabated,” ParaScale chief executive officer Sajai Krishnan said in a statement. “We are very excited to have been selected by GigeNet as the best all-around platform for service providers to pursue the rapidly evolving cloud storage opportunity.”
