(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — SSL certificate provider GeoTrust (www.geotrust.com) announced on Tuesday that the most-visited websites protect their visitors with GeoTrust certificates, according to the December 2010 Alexa-Netcraft SSL Index.

A day after this announcment, GeoTrust launched a new commercial to support its latest campaign prompting Go Daddy customers to trade in their SSL certificates for one from GeoTrust at no charge. The commercial is designed to parody racy Go Daddy ads, asking viewers “Who’s your Daddy Now?” and mocking Go Daddy’s use of scantily clad women in advertisements.

When the WHIR interviewed Go Daddy president and chief operating officer Warren Adelman in early December 2010, he expressed no concern with the campaign.

According to December’s Alexa-Netcraft report, GeoTrust ranked above Go Daddy for the seventh straight month, securing 35,540 unique domains among the Internet’s 1 million most visited websites.

The report says Go Daddy registered 27,578 unique domains over the same period.

“GeoTrust is consistently leading the low-cost, high-volume segment of the SSL market over competitors such as Go Daddy,” said Jeff Barto, senior product marketing manager for GeoTrust. “We expect to continue our lead into 2011 on the strength of our global service reach, convenience, attractive prices and product reputation.”

Since May 2010 the Alexa-Netcraft SSL Index has cross-referened the Netcraft SSL Survey with the Alexa Top Sites List, indicating SSL certificate usage across 1 million websites.

GeoTrust is currently offering companies a free 30-day trial of its SSL certificates as part of its latest promotion.
