From Fujitsu, the image shows six PRIMERGY CX1000 racks back-to-back
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center hardware manufacturer Fujitsu issued a press release this week saying that the scale-out potential demonstrated in a recent test of its PRIMERGY CX1000 Cloud eXtension server rack illustrated the possible web-hosting and telecommunications application of the technology.
According to Fujitsu, capacity tests carried out by Open-Xchange, developer of a communications software platform that is very popular among web hosting providers, demonstrated that up to 1.5 million concurrent users could be supported on a single 19-inch PRIMERGY CX1000 server rack.
A PDF white paper on the Fujitsu website describes how the product was “built to float clouds.”
Fujitsu says the solution is designed for web hosts and telcos facing the challenging task of guaranteeing service to millions of users while staying profitable, in the face of unpredictable power and cooling costs. It also addresses the need to get the most out of limited data center resources.
The PRIMERGY CX1000 server, says Fujitsu, is designed to deliver as much computing power as possible for square foot, at the lowest possible price, packing 38 server nodes into an industry standard rack.
The company says the technology cuts power and cooling costs by 20 percent in comparison to a standard rack server assembly.
The tool seems to be a continuation of a recent trend among computing hardware makers of designing products specifically for the hosting environment. In mid-2011, Dell introduced several micro-server products, stripping away unnecessary components to slot multiple tiny servers into a 3U rack-mount chasiss.
Fujitsu says the “Cool-Central” architecture of the CX1000 servers “[removes] the need for the data center hot aisle” to save on cooling, and on floor space by allowing servers to be racked back-to-back.
“Open-Xchange plans to again double its user base to 80 million paid mail boxes by the end of 2012, so we need an IT architecture that our customers can rely on to achieve our growth and revenue goals,” says Open-Xchange CTO Jürgen Geck, quoted in the press release. “For the same reason, Fujitsu’s PRIMERGY CX1000 is the right choice for web hosts and telcos, which can now also take advantage of a highly-scalable, cost-effective and proven open source collaboration solution based on Open-Xchange.”
More information on the PRIMERGY CX1000 is available from the product page on the Fujitsu website.
