(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Last week, four Philippine government agency websites were defaced by hackers, which National Computer Center (www.ncc.gov.ph) director-general Tim Diaz de Rivera said was more of an embarrassment to the government more than anything else.
Last week, the sites for the Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, National Disaster Coordinating Council, and Department of Labor and Employment were all defaced in what may or not be a politically motivated occurrence.
According to a local report from the Manila Bulletin, National Computer Center said the attack was not successful because it was perpetrated by “genius crackers,” but rather because of “irresponsible and lazy system administrators and web developers.”
According to newspaper The Philippine Star, the Anti-Computer Crimes Division of the National Bureau of Investigation has begun investigating the websites defacing, noting that it is verifying information that Indonesia is one of the source countries of the attacks.
As the Philippines prepares for an “automated” May 10 election, the Commission on Elections recently assured citizens that it will be keeping backup copies of data in multiple locations in the event of hacking threats, and also to ensure that all votes are carefully audited.
