February 14, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — UltraDNS Corporation (ultradns.com) today announced that
r
Forbes.com has selected UltraDNS to manage its Domain Name System.
r
Forbes.com joins a number of Internet brands like Oracle and MSN Hotmail
r
that outsource DNS management to ensure the integrity and security of their
r
Web sites. UltraDNS’s Managed DNS Service guarantees 100 percent uptime for
r
users that count on Forbes.com for commentary, analysis, financial tools and
r
realtime reporting.
r
r
“Our users rely on Forbes.com for timely, relevant content and our
r
advertisers expect quantifiable exposure to our readers, the world’s
r
business leaders,” said Michael Smith, CTO of Forbes.com. “A brand like ours
r
cannot afford downtime due to DNS errors or denial of service attacks.
r
Forbes.com is a trusted resource for business information on the Web and
r
UltraDNS helps us insure the integrity of that value proposition.”
r
r
According to Ray Stephens, vice president of marketing for UltraDNS,
r
“Forbes.com’s decision to select UltraDNS for outsourced DNS management will
r
not only increase the reliability and security of their Web site, it will
r
allow the company to streamline and lower IT expenditures, increase
r
manageability, and propagate DNS changes worldwide, in less than five
r
minutes, giving the company the assurance that they are providing their end
r
users with the best online experience.”
r
r
The current DNS system is based on open-source software called BIND
r
(Berkeley Internet Name Domain) that became the de facto standard but was
r
never developed for commercial use. Consequently, BIND is prone to failure
r
and exploitation by hackers. BIND tops the SANS Institute’s list of Internet
r
security risk factors, and in a traffic analysis done by performance
r
measurement company Keynote Systems, BIND-based DNS was responsible for 29
r
percent of Web page download failures. CERT, a center of Internet security
r
expertise at the Software Engineering Institute, a federally funded research
r
and development center operated by Carnegie Mellon University, cited that
r
over 85 percent of top level domains are using outdated or unknown versions
r
of BIND.
r
r
Using Oracle relational database technology and its directory Services
r
Platform, UltraDNS has built a global server network designed to meet
r
demands for 100 percent SLA-guaranteed reliability, security, and
r
performance data management.
