Following the Recession, CIOs Plan to Move Forward With Upgrades, Other Initiatives: Report

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Technology executives forced to shelve projects during the worst economic recession since the Great Depression are signaling a readiness to make critical IT investments according to new survey of Canadian CIOs.

CIOs were asked, “Which IT projects, if any, did you put on hold in 2009 due to the economy that you plan to implement post-recession?” According to the study, 30 percent of CIOs interviewed said they plan to implement post-recession software and hardware upgrades that had been deferred because of the weak economy. While software and hardware upgrades led the planned initiatives, 16 percent foresee moving forward with virtualization projects, and 11 percent with website design initiatives as conditions improve.

Further down the list are internal collaboration/technology tools at 7 percent, cloud computing, and company-branded social media sites both at 5 percent. Multiple responses were permitted. Interestingly, this survey seems to show that seemingly hot business propositions such as cloud computing and and social media could be cooling off.

“Many companies looking to take advantage of the economic rebound will implement software and hardware upgrades to improve efficiency and manage costs,” said Megan Slabinski, president of Robert Half Technology’s Canadian operations. “Companies that have been working with lean IT teams are benefiting from the exceptional talent that is currently available.”

The plan to move forward with new technology initiatives is good news for IT job seekers, Slabinski added. “As companies launch previously delayed initiatives, highly skilled professionals are required on a full-time and project basis to manage initiatives ranging from system installations to network support.”

The survey was developed by information technology firm Robert Half Technology (www.roberthalftechnology.com), and conducted by an independent research firm, which interviewed by phone 270 CIOs from companies across Canada with 100 or more employees. RHT recently delivered a buoyant report (that also surveyed 270 CIOs) finding that 12 percent of CIOs anticipated hiring additional IT staff in the second quarter of 2009 (but with four percent planning staff reductions in the next three months.)
