(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – A fire erupted at web hosting provider PEER 1′s (www.peer1.com) colocation facilities, Toronto 151 Front Street data center, early Sunday morning, temporarily knocking the facility offline.
The company says its monitoring systems detected the fire at 2:26 a.m. EST Sunday, which was localized to the facility’s 802 Suite UPS room.
PEER 1′s staff, building engineers, and electrical contractors worked alongside the Toronto Fire Department to gain access and restore services to the building.
As a safety precaution, the company shut down all power to the 7th and 8th floor suites of the data center.
The fire department used dry chemical and carbon dioxide extinguishers to fight the fire.
Since no water was used, all PEER 1 equipment, with the exception of the UPS, and all client equipment was unaffected.
The company kept customers in the loop though progress updates on the PEER 1 forum and Twitter page.
By 4:00 a.m. EST, the company managed to restore power to Suites 709 and 816, but were continuing to resolve lingering issues within Suites 802 and 816.
The company manually bypassed the Suite 802 UPS in an attempt to restore power to Suite 802 and network connectivity to Suite 816.
At 5:04 am EST on Monday, the company updated its forums, informing customers that its “circuits are being energized and power is being restored”.
The company added that it would soon send out an official follow up via email to all affected customers.
This is not the first time PEER 1 has suffered an outage caused by a fire at one of its data center.
Nearly one year ago, the company’s downtown Vancouver facility went offline after an underground fire cut power to the entire eastern half of the city.
Another fire occurred this weekend at the Seattle Fisher Plaza data center, causing outages at a few websites including payment gateway service provider Authorize.net.
