A diagram illustrates how iWeb's "Smart Layer" technology works, creating a virtualized environment on dedicated server hardware
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider iWeb announced on Monday that ex-chief financial officer of Rackspace Bruce Knooihuizen has joined its board of directors.
This appointment will support its not-yet-released cloud infrastructure service offering set to be launched at some point this spring. As a hosting provider looking to create a new service offering, such as cloud infrastructure, it makes sense to add talent to the management team that has done it before. Knooihuizen played a key role in taking Rackspace public in 2008, in one of the biggest IPO in the web hosting industry at the time. When he left Rackspace, Rackspace’s value had grown to nearly $4.9 billion.
“We are very happy with the addition of Bruce Knooihuizen to our board of directors, his experience in building some of the most successful and profitable cloud and telecom infrastructures will add depth to an already strong management team,” Eric Chouinard, iWeb’s CEO and co-founder said in a statement. “Just as importantly, Bruce shares our values and our vision for the future of the industry. He understands what we are building, here at iWeb, and has decided to get involved at a pivotal time.”
Knooihuizen has worked in the telecommunications industry since 1998.
Prior to Rackspace, he oversaw the growth of Dobson Communications Corporation. It was valued at nearly $5 billion at the time of its sale to AT&T, and its revenues had grown from $34 million to $1.4 billion.
The announcement comes just over a month after iWeb’s shared hosting division Funio became a completely separate entity.
With this separation, iWeb will focus on the development of its Smart Server technology, which brings the flexibility of cloud computing to a dedicated server. The servers use virtualization but get their own dedicated server hardware.
It is unclear what iWeb’s cloud infrastructure will look like, but it will be launched in the next few months.
According to the press release, iWeb servers more than 20,000 customers in 150 countries.

Cloud infrastructure is relatively new and a booming field. If reputed companies like iWeb are entering into this field then it would be very good the service buyers.
