EvoSwitch Green Data Center to More Than Double in Space

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Amsterdam carbon-neutral data center operator EvoSwitch (www.evoswitch.com) announced on Monday it will double in size to meet the growing customer demand.

The data center will expand from its current 45,000 square foot floor area by an additional 55,000 square feet of operational floor space, to bring it to a total of 100,000 square feet of space.

Once the third phase development is completed, it will significantly increase energy savings in the already energy-efficient data center, says EvoSwitch.

“The additional energy savings are the direct result of the deployment of new technologies and the highly innovative configuration of our systems,” says Eric Boonstra, managing director of EvoSwitch. “This will allow us to use fere cooling, i.e. cooling by using the outdoor temperature, 365 days per year and to keep the energy-wasting compressor completely shut off all year long. The additional growth in customers will also have a positive impact on our energy savings.”

The third phase is scheduled to be operational in the third quarter of 2010.

The additional 55,000 square feet of space will accommodate 800 data center racks for customers which include iWikipedia, Royal Joh. Enschedé, Logica and Codemasters.

The new 19-inch racks will be installed in 25 corridors, using the most advanced Aisle Containment technology.

Although EvoSwitch currently has a Power Usage Effectiveness rate of 1.5, which was previously lowered from the facility’s 1.6 PUE rating in 2008.

Once the third phase is completed, the PUE will further decrese to 1.2 and the facility will use at least 80 percent less power than a traditional data center.

EvoSwitch says the third phase development will be completed quickly due to an innovative technique that uses a modular approach developed by supplier DataXenter (www.dataxenter.com). The method installs various modular data center boxes which will each be locally equipped with two 160 kW UPS.

The phase will incorporate, as a standard feature, a 2N emergency power supply in each data center box in order to provide customers with the maximum technical assurance possible against power interruption.

EvoSwitch will add two more 2.5MVA transformers to its current four, as well as another four emergency power supplies of 1.5 MVA each to the existing 10 power supplies.

Additional private suites will be installed during the third phase, which basically act as miniature versions of a data center.
