April 2, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Despite the rampant spread of Internet viruses, many European businessesare still not using anti-virus software or keeping it up to date, according to a new study by McAfee Security.

McAfee surveyed 500 small to medium-sized businesses in the UK, Italy, Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain.

In the UK and France, only about 40 percent of companies surveyed said they have been keeping their anti-virus software up to date. In Italy, about 46 percent of companies were up to date. In Spain, where laws require businesses to have security systems and keep them up to date, 73 percent of companies surveyed said their anti-virus software was updated.

In Germany, one in 10 companies said that they do not use any anti-virus software, while in Britain and Spain, only one percent said they were not protected.
