.EU Registrations Surpass One Million
April 10, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web analytics firm NetNames (netnames.com) announced on Friday that there has been over one million applications for the new .eu European domain name since it opened its registration to the general public on Friday.
The last major domain name launch was .info in 2001, which took over a year to reach the same level of popularity. There are now over 1.3 million active .eu domain names of which 420,000 are German, 271,000 are British and 155,000 are Dutch.
“The new European domain name has exceeded all expectations and it could easily become one of the top three most popular domain names within a year,” says Jonathan Robinson, chief operating officer for NetNames. “The response from the public has been unprecedented and any business which failed to secure its .eu presence before Friday could well find itself being cybersquatted. The next few months are likely to see some very high profile disputes.”
There are 85.6 million domain names on the Web including 40 million registered .com domains, 9 million .de domains, 5.5 million .net domains, 4.5 million .co.uk domains, and 3 million .org domains.
