April 12, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The European Commission announced on Thursday that more than 2.5 million .eu domain names have been registered a year after the top-level domain was first offered.
The domain, which is offered to individuals, organizations and companies in the EU, is now the third most popular top-level domain in Europe after the UK’s .uk and Germany’s .de.
Registration for .eu domain names has been the highest in Germany, drawing 31 percent of its total registration market. The UK users trail in second place with 17 percent, while citizens from the Netherlands account for 12 percent of total .eu registrants.
Applications for the .eu domain have been accepted from trademark holders and public bodies since December 2005, and from other businesses and the public since April last year. The domain is maintained by the not-for-profit organization EURid.
