EU Domain Outgrows BIZ
April 13, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — A report issued Thursday by Internet researcher Ipwalk (ipwalk.com) said that the .eu domain had quickly outgrown the established top-level domain .biz in the time since its land rush period began last Friday.
According to Ipwalk, the .eu domain is on pace to outgrow the .info domain in approximately four months, if the current rate of new registrations continues.
The land rush period began Friday after two sunrise periods. During the sunrise periods, says Ipwalk, the .eu registry operator EURid received 364,218 applications. In the first 24 hours of the land rush period, the company received approximately 800,000 applications.
As of Thursday, there are 1,454,128 active .eu domains, surpassing the 1,352,984 active .biz domains. The .biz TLD was introduced in 2001, and carries certain restrictions limiting it to business and commercial use.
According to Ipwalk, there are currently 2,616,048 registered .info domain names. There are no restrictions on the .info domain.
