Equinix's LEED-certified SV2 International Business Exchange data center.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Equinix (www.equinix.com) announced on Wednesday its SV2 International Business Exchange data center in Santa Clara, California has earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification (www.usgbc.org) from the US Green Building Council.
The latest accreditation extends Equinix’s global leadership in operating energy efficient data centers, and builds on its history of innovative programs designed to help enterprises reduce their carbon footprint, says the company.
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system which provides third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance.
The certification takes into account a range of metrics, including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources.
Other data center operators to recently earn LEED certification are Digital Realty Trust for its 1525 Comstock data center property in Santa Clara, and Sabey Data Centers for its Intergate.Columbia facility in East Wenatchee, Washington.
The SV2 IBX data center received LEED certification under the existing building program following its expansion and green retrofit, which it completed in mid-2009.
The data center’s retrofit included the installation of air-side economizers, fans incorporating variable frequency drives and LED light fixtures and occupancy sensors, and other efficiency procedures.
As a result of the retrofit, the data center has saved more than four million kWh in energy annually, and will pay for itself in under four years.
The success of the retrofit project also led to the data center being rewarded in June 2009 with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s Silicon Valley Power Energy Innovator Award for its energy-saving design.
“This commitment carries through to all new Equinix IBX data centers, as well, which are designed in accordance with our best-practice guideline,” says Dave Pickut, CTO of Equinix. “We’re very proud of the fact that retrofit projects, such as SV2, and recently designed IBX data centers, such as those in New York and Sydney, have achieved industry-leading efficiency ratings.”
