Equinix to Build New Data Center in Zurich

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Global data center services provider Equinix (www.equinix.com) plans to build a 2,983 square meter (or 32,108 square foot) data center in Zurich, Switzerland, which will double Equinix’s footprint in Zurich, one of its largest European markets for interconnection services.

According to Equinix’s Tuesday announcement, the new ZH4 center is being built to meet the region’s demand for colocation and data center services, and is expected to open in the second quarter of 2010. The new facility will be Equinix’s fourth International Business Exchange (or IBX) data center in Zurich.

“With its position as a strategic hub for network service providers and the financial services and media sectors, Zurich is an ideal market for Equinix’s data center colocation and interconnection services,” Equinix Europe president Eric Schwartz said in a statement. “By investing in the construction of this new center in a market that has seen few recent data center builds, and at a time when demand continues to outpace supply, Equinix is signaling its strong commitment to this market and to building upon its leadership in the region.”

Located in central Zurich, ZH4 will build upon the rich network density of Equinix’s nearby ZH1 and ZH2 centers, providing interconnection between leading service provider networks, including carriers, ISPs, international PTT’s and other broadband networks.

In addition to providing a central point for these networks to meet, the ZH4 center will offer a variety of interconnection and peering services, including direct cross-connects between networks, as well as the Equinix Exchange central switching fabric.

In total, the facility will feature 1,200 square meters (or 12,920 square feet) of sellable data center space.

Zurich is just one of many markets for Equinix, which provides data center services worldwide via 42 International Business Exchange data centers in 18 markets between North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Last week, Equinix announced it would be offering high performance colocation and low-latency connectivity solutions to Japan’s largest commodity futures exchange, Tokyo Commodity Exchange (www.tocom.or.jp), via Equinix’s two Tokyo IBX data centers.
