Equinix to build $100M Data Center in Washington DC Area

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — As part of its $1.4 billion-multiyear expansion program, data center operator Equinix (www.equinix.com) will be building a $100 million data center International Business Exchange data center in its Washington-area campus.

Scheduled to open in the summer of 2010, the new IBX data center will have capacity for 1,750 cabinets, according to a Washington Business Journal report, this 152,000-square-foot facility will make Equinix’s Ashburn, Virginia data center campus, where it currently operates five other data centers, one of the richest IP network interconnection points in the US. The Ashburn campus provides more than 470,000 square feet of data center space and access to more than 130 networks.

The Washington Business Journal reported that Equinix will be designing the new facility to meet the demands of its existing telecommunications customers, as well as government customers and contractors.

The Ashburn facility is part of Equinix’s expansion program for 15 of the 18 markets in which it currently operates. By the end of 2009, it will have invested more than $1 billion in expansions since the start of 2007. Less than three weeks ago, Equinix opened its fourth International Business Exchange data center in the Los Angeles area, which was also part of the expansion.

Equinix has been very active in its 18 worldwide markets in which it operates 45 international business exchange data centers. In July, Equinix unveiled plans to build its fourth IBX data center in Zurich, Switzerland. The new, 32,108-square-foot ZH4 facility will double Equinix’s footprint in Zurich, which is one of its largest European markets for interconnection services. A week earlier, Equinix announced it would be offering high performance colocation and low-latency connectivity solutions to Japan’s largest commodity futures exchange, Tokyo Commodity Exchange (www.tocom.or.jp), via Equinix’s two Tokyo IBX data centers.
