Equinix Sydney Data Center Houses PIPE International

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Equinix (www.equinix.com) announced on Tuesday that PIPE International (www.pipeinternational.com) has selected Equinix as a key interconnect provider for its new PIPE Pacific Cable undersea cable.

Through Equinix Sydney-1 International Business Exchange data center located in its Sydney campus, Equinix will give PIPE access to the aggregation of Australia’s leading carriers operating within the center.

In addition to the Sydney IBX data center, PIPE is also using Equinix’s data centers in Tokyo and San Jose.

PIPE International’s newly laid PPC-1 undersea cable extends 22,632 feet from Guam to its landing point on Sydney.

With a capacity of 2.56TB per second, the PPC-1 system will provide significant additional capacity to Australia, as well as provide onward connectivity to Asia and the United States.

“We are extremely pleased to have been selected by PIPE International to help create market interest for the PPC-1 undersea cable project,” says Samuel Lee, president of Equinix Asia Pacific. “We provide a very efficient and secure means to distribute optimized traffic to the Australian market as well as increase the options for international transit and transport services out of Australia. The new PPC-1 cable system will also enable our customers to increase the resilience of their international network and provide additional redundancy.”

Equinix currently operates IBX data centers in 18 countries. The Sydney campus houses two facilities, Sydney-1 and Sydney-2.

Between the two facilities, the company has a combined floor space of about 120,000 square feet. The data center campus underwent a $3.8 million expansion in November 2006 in which it added 10,000 square feet of space and 400 cabinets.
