Equinix Opens Third Data Center in Atlanta

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Equinix (www.equinix.com) announced on Monday it has opened its first phase of its third International Business Exchange data center in Atlanta.

The move follows Equinix’s recent opening of its its sixth IBX data center in the Washington DC metropolitan area, as well as expanding its Singapore SG2 data center.

Located in the Atlanta city center, the new $61 million Atlanta IBX data center offers a total of 1,450 cabinet equivalents upon the completion of a second phase, which is already under construction. It is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The new IBX data center is connected to Equinix’s two existing IBX data centers in Atlanta, providing immediate access to almost 50 network providers.

“Opening our newest IBX data center in Atlanta will enable us to meet existing demand from some of the largest enterprise and telecommunications companies in the world — many of which are existing Equinix customers looking to increase their capacity as they continue to build strategic business ecosystems in this important market,” says Pete Ferris, president of Equinix North America. “Currently, we’re seeing strong interest from our network customers. We’re pleased to meet the market’s need with the opening of another state-of-the-art International Business Exchange data center.”

The first phase of the Atlanta IBX data center features 400 cabinet equivalents.

The second and final phase will add about 1,050 cabinet equivalents when completed in the first quarter of 2011.
