Data center and colocation provider Equinix has launched a service that gives customers on-demand, direct access to multiple clouds and networks without the bottlenecks associated with accessing cloud services across the public Internet.

Launched Wednesday, the Equinix Cloud Exchange provides advanced interconnection between cloud service providers and cloud consumers, giving them private, high-performance connections to services from more than 450 cloud services providers and 975 networks.

The Equinix Cloud Exchange also applies a concept Equinix calls “one port, many virtual circuits,” which means that users and service providers can connect to many different participants over a single physical port.

Businesses can join the Equinix Cloud Exchange in 13 markets: Silicon Valley, Washington D.C., New York, Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris. The company plans on expanding to 6 additional markets by the end of the year.

As for high-profile public cloud services from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, customers can connect to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute in Silicon Valley, Washington, D.C. and London, with additional markets planned by the end of 2014.

According to Equinix, enterprises need this sort of direct access to adopt hybrid cloud solutions, ensuring high levels of privacy, performance and reliability. In internal tests, for instance, Equinix was able to increase cloud service throughput by 147 percent compared to public internet connections.

“As an increasing number of enterprises move to the cloud, they require a new level of interconnectivity to access multiple clouds, across multiple sites, from a broad range of networks,” stated Tony Bishop, Chief Strategy Officer at The 451 Group. He noted that Equinix is well-positioned to provide this connectivity given its global data center footprint and existing network of partners.

The Equinix Cloud Exchange can also be used by systems integrators, IT services companies, SaaS and IaaS providers, networks and cloud enablers to augment their cloud computing efforts.

Equinix Cloud Exchange can ultimately be thought of as a way to deliver the benefits of the cloud without the security and performance limitations of the open internet.
