April 22, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Equinix (equinix.com), a provider of network-neutral data centers and Internet exchange services, announced on Thursday that it had signed a long-term lease for an additional 95,000 square feet of data center space adjacent to its Washington, DC Internet Business Exchange (IBX) center. The company said it plans to house customers in the newly expanded facility beginning November 1, 2004.
According to Equinix, the newly signed lease increases its data center footprint in Washington by 50 percent, adding to the 180,000 square feet of data center space Equinix currently operates in Ashburn, Virginia. Equinix operates 14 IBX facilities in five countries. The Washington expansion, the company said, brings its global footprint to 1.3 million square feet.
“We are seeing a tremendous amount of customer demand for our Internet hubs and exchange services in the Washington DC market,” says Peter Van Camp, CEO of Equinix. “With our existing DC center approaching 60 percent utilization, this new expansion gives us additional capacity to take advantage of this momentum with minimal capital investment.”
