(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Global data center services provider Equinix (www.equinix.com) has made an agreement with Internet exchange provider Internet Multifeed (www.mfeed.co.jp) to extend its Japan Network Access Point (www.mfeed.co.jp/english/service/jpnap.html) peering fabric into the Equinix Tokyo-2 (TY2) International Business Exchange data center.
JPNAP’s point-of-presence in Equinix’s TY2 IBX center enables Equinix customers to directly exchange IP traffic with JPNAP’s customers such as Internet Service Providers, CATV carriers, and content providers, according to Equinix’s Monday announcement. Similarly, JPNAP customers will have direct access to the extensive international carrier community at Equinix’s two Tokyo IBX centers, which are interconnected directly by Equinix’s IBXLink service.
“As a global leader in data center and Internet exchange services, Equinix is committed to providing access to high performance peering points for the exchange of Internet traffic,” Equinix chief marketing officer Jarrett Appleby said in a statement. “With the increasing strategic importance of the Japan market, especially for international content providers, the critical mass of participants and the significant traffic volume at JPNAP represents a high-quality platform for Equinix’s global customers seeking to access this important market.”
The extension of the JPNAP peering fabric, the largest Internet Exchange in Japan by traffic, combined with the Equinix Exchange peering platform, will provide diverse interconnection options for Equinix customers in both of its Tokyo data centers.
“We are enthusiastic about our agreement with Equinix and the interconnection benefits that this collaboration will bring to Japan’s information communications sector,” MF representative director and executive vice president Ryoichi Hosoya said in a statement. “This agreement will allow Equinix and MF customers to foster rich interconnection across both of our respective network-neutral platforms in a more cost efficient and reliable manner.”
This agreement with MF is Equinix latest in Japan following its June deal with Japan’s largest commodity futures exchange Tokyo Commodity Exchange (www.tocom.or.jp). According to the agreement, Equinix is offering high performance colocation and low-latency connectivity solutions to TOCOM market participants through its two Tokyo data centers.
Equinix has been very active in its 18 worldwide markets in which it operates 45 international business exchange data centers. Earlier this month, as part of its $1.4 billion, multi-year expansion program, Equinix announced plans to build a $100 million data center IBX data center in the US at its Washington-area campus to open in the summer of 2010. In July, the company unveiled plans to build its fourth IBX data center in Zurich, Switzerland. The new, 32,108-square-foot ZH4 facility will double Equinix’s footprint in Zurich, which is one of its largest European markets for interconnection services.
