Equinix Builds Its Fourth Data Center in LA

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Equinix (www.equinix.com) announced on Thursday it has opened its fourth International Business Exchange data center in the Los Angeles area.

Located near the company’s existing LA3 center in El Segundo, the new LA4 data center spans 177,000 square feet and will feature about 3,000 cabinets at full build out.

The facility will meet the demand for premium data center colocation and network exchange services in the LA region from companies in the entertainment and digital media sectors.

Equinix invested $95 million to build out the first phase of the center. The facility will support 800 cabinets and more than 10,000 square feet of IBXflex Space, which is designed for customers seeking office space within the same data center as their equipment deployment.

The new LA4 center is directly linked to Equinix’s three other Los Angeles area IBX centers, including its two downtown LA centers, through the Equinix IBXLink service.

IBXLink provides redundant fiber links that let customers connect to each other across the four centers as if they were located in the same building.

As a result, customers in the new LA4 center will have direct access to the more than 60 carriers and network services providers operating in Equinix’s existing LA area centers.

The new data center is part of Equinix’s 2009 expansion program that includes increasing the company’s data center footprint in 10 out of 18 markets in which it currently operates.

By the end of 2009, the company will have invested over $1 billion in expansions since the start of 2007.

Most recently, Equinix acquired a 130,000 square foot data center in Frankfurt, Germany, and the recent build out of the third phase of its New York-4 International Business Exchange data center in Secaucus, New Jersey
