Enterprise DNS Provider Comwired Buys DNS.com Domain, Announces Advanced Hosted DNS Solutions

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Managed domain name system services provider Comwired (www.comwired.com) has acquired the domain name DNS.com (www.dns.com) and is launching the company’s most advanced hosted DNS solutions under the new URL.

DNS is a hierarchical naming system for any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. While not obvious to everyone using online devices, DNS importantly serves as the Internet’s phone book, translating human-friendly hostnames (such as www.thewhir.com) into a numerical IP address (such as 209.212.149.80). Recent advancements have enabled organizations to use DNS technology to hasten, direct and balance Web traffic.

According to Comwired’s Monday announcement, the acquisition of this industry category-defining domain comes as Comwired plans to bring the company’s message of safer, more reliable DNS to a wider audience. The company has also announced new pricing and plans targeting the enterprise market including new location-based DNS services. Hundreds of enterprise customers have been migrated to the new platform since launching the site this month.

“This opportunity was the next step in solidifying our position in the DNS marketplace while also giving clients a peace of mind that they are being supported by a highly-robust, and economically practical DNS solution,” Daniel Kimball, Comwired Inc.’s CEO, stated. “Like many of our customers, we pride ourselves on being a technology- and service-oriented business. The DNS.com domain is a powerful asset which will help expand our online community through increased name recognition and memorability.”

Having built the first enterprise-class DNS network with local geo-aware capabilities, Comwired now serves websites that require maximum protection against DNS-based online attacks and other forms of downtime. In addition to selling directly to businesses and consumers, the company offers its hosted DNS services via resellers including web hosting companies and domain name registrars.

Kimball noted that DNS.com has drawn a 700-percent increase in traffic for the company’s DNS service. “This acquisition is a significant investment in our industry and a major advancement in our strategic posture,” Kimball said.

Monday’s announcement is the latest effort in making DNS more visible. In an effort to popularize DNS services as mainstream technologies, managed DNS provider Dynamic Network Services Inc. (www.dyn.com) launched its “DNS is Sexy” campaign” (www.dnsissexy.com), a new effort to spotlight DNS services, which for one reason or another has historically remained largely behind the scenes.
