eNom Selected as a Registrar for .CO Domain Names

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Domain name wholesaler eNom (www.enom.com) has become one of only a handful of registrars for .CO domain names.

Until the new .CO registry authority, .CO Internet S.A.S., opened up its TLD for global availability, .CO, the country code for Colombia, was only available in that country. According to eNom’s Wednesday announcement,. eNom.com and BulkRegister.com, both wholly owned subsidiaries of Demand Media, Inc., will be participating in all phases of the .CO re-launch.

Due to limitations imposed by governing policy, there can only be ten .CO accredited registrars during the registry’s first year of operation as a globally available domain, including eight international and two local registrars based in Colombia. The core accredited registrars include Dotster, MelbourneIT, My.com.co, Network Solutions, Register.com, Tucows, as well as United Internet companies 1&1 and InternetX, and GoDaddy.com and its subsidiary Wild West Domains.

Registrars that were unable to be official accredited registrars can still actively participate in the launch of .CO by becoming a reseller of one of the core partners.

eNom will give its resellers full access to these names through its proprietary API and Instant Reseller solutions, differentiating it from other registrars.

“eNom is honored to be one of the ten registrars selected to sell the .CO domain extension,” said Chris Sheridan, platform vice president for social media firm Demand Media (www.demandmedia.com). “We will be supporting all phases of the .CO re-launch and we expect a strong adoption from our reseller channel for this TLD.”

During the Grandfather phase through March 31, existing com.co, net.co and nom.co domain owners can transfer and get their reserved .CO domains through eNom’s network and BulkRegister.com. Specifically, resellers can start offering com.co, net.co, and nom.co via eNom’s network, the new Instant Reseller interface and eNom’s API. End users can register these domains through eNom.com and BulkRegister.com.

.CO Internet S.A.S. chief executive officer Juan Diego Calle said .CO, a new globally recognizable and credible domain name extension, offers more choice in online branding. “Today’s consumers, entrepreneurs and companies need more access to short and memorable domain names and we are excited to partner with the world class registrar eNom to fill this critical marketplace need,” Calle stated.

Beginning in April, trademark owners can register their eligible trademarked names. At the end of June, users can register premium, un-trademarked .CO domains. Within the month of July .CO domains will become available to the general public on a first come, first served basis.
