EMC, Cisco, MIT Plan $100M Data Center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — EMC, Cisco, MIT and the University of Massachussetts are potentially partnering up to build a new $100 million data center in Holyoke, Massachusetts, according to several reports.

Earlier this week, IBM announced it broke ground at its new energy efficient, $12.4 million, 6,000-square-foot data center at Syracuse University, which is expected to use 50 percent less energy.

With its readily available hydroelectric power, Holyoke is an ideal location for the environmentally-friendly, high performance data center project.

The plans for the project will announced later this week by the state and a consortium of universities and technology companies.

The proposed data center will be managed by a partnership between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Massachusetts, and will also include EMC and Cisco Systems.

So far, the technology partners have only signed on to participate in the 120-day planning phase of the project.

However, the project’s organizers say the data center will provide an invaluable resource for the state’s hi-tech industry and academic institutions.

The data center will also offer a critical infrastructure to host high-tech industries in the area.

Some industry analysts say the project is intended to attract high-profile companies like Google to invest in the area.
