(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Email security firm eleven (www.eleven.de) is at the 9th German Anti-Spam Summit this week where it presented the five spam trends that email users and companies will face over the next 12 months.

Thursday is the final day for the summit and it is part of the first Internet Security Days (www.internet-security-days.com) in Brühl, according to the press release.

Internet Security Days is the result of a partnership with the team behind World Hosting Days. The event is designed as a networking and exhibition event, according to the press release.

According to eleven, email users should expect an increase in professionalization, making it much harder to detect whether an email is legitimate or counterfeit. eleven says it is important to use email security solutions that intercept fake email before it reaches the inbox.

eleven warns email users to be wary of shortened URLs because more and more they are being used to disguise links in spam emails and evade spam filters.

Email users should also be on the lookout for localized attacks, according to eleven. Also, with IPv6, blacklist-based anti-spam solutions will become obsolete. According to eleven, “the significant expansion of the address space allows for the use of throwaway addresses, which will be used only once for spamming.” Blacklist relies on an address being used several times for sending spam, eleven says.

eleven says event spam is an ongoing trend, since most email users are no longer tricked by pharma spam.
