eLINIA Launches Cloud Storage

September 24, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Managed services provider eLINIA (elinia.com) has launched a Cloud-based back-up and storage service for small and medium-sized businesses.

According to eLINIA’s announcement Wednesday, the new service incorporates the company’s own encrypted back-up service combined Amazon’s S3 technology to provide “a fully managed, massively scalable, storage infrastructure.” It lets businesses back up all their local servers and databases, and also products such as Microsoft Exchange.

“We’ve seen a sharp rise in the number of requests we receive for remote backup over the past 6 months,” eLINIA technical architect James Carnie said in a statement. “We’ve used our established technology base and linked this securely to ‘in the cloud’ services, providing peace of mind in knowing the data is both secure and remote from [the] customer['s] site.”

Based in Cardiff, Wales, eLINIA delivers its cloud storage service using a local back-up appliance to cache data before transferring it directly to highly secure data centers in the UK and also onto Amazon’s Cloud for added diversity and scalability.

“Customers we have spoken to see tape back up as unreliable,” Carnie said. “There’s a lot of management required every day to ensure critical business data is secure, and even then there are no guarantees that data won?t be stolen or simply lost. Cloud storage eliminates this risk.”

While eLINIA is the latest to launch a cloud storage solution, another cloud storage service launched in June when platform provider Nirvanix announced it would be releasing its Storage Delivery Network for large businesses. In late July, cloud storage system provider Tilana launched its own cloud storage solution.

However, while these companies focus on larger companies, eLINIA’s solution enables SMBs to use a similar service.
