(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Content delivery network EdgeCast Networks (www.edgecast.com) and web hosting provider Media Temple (www.mediatemple.net) announced on Tuesday the launch of Media Temple’s ProCDN. According to the press release, the service is a no-commitment, pay-as-you-go format to accelerate website performance and availability.

Media Temple says its ProCDN is part of its ProDev product line, a group of services to provide existing customers with “the most advanced hosting services in the industry.”

“In a global marketplace where every millisecond counts, a single fast web server is no longer enough,” Demian Sellfors, CEO of Media Temple said in a statement. “If you’re slow, users notice, search engines notice, and it can be incredibly costly. I’m excited to be able to offer global power, performance, and scale to all our customers with a service that’s both easy to use and easy to pay for.”

Prior to ProCDN’s launch, Media Temple’s customers served all content from two data centers in El Segundo, California and Ashburn, Virginia. Now, customer content is distributed to twenty data centers worldwide, improving the end user experience “significantly.”

“The best way to be faster is to be closer, and being closer means either building your own global network or using someone else’s. Only a few years ago, the benefits of CDN were reserved for organizations with millions of dollars and thousands of hours to invest,” James Segil, president of EdgeCast said in a statement. “Media Temple is leading the way in the premium hosting industry by opening up the world’s best network to their customers.”

In February, web host Nexcess launched a content delivery network powered by EdgeCast.
