Web host PEER 1 Hosting announced on Thursday that ecommerce platform provider Magento is the winner of its 2011 Partner of the Year award.

PEER 1 says it handed the award out earlier this month in Los Angeles. The web host’s inaugural award honors excellence in customer service and top referrals.

This news comes a few days after PEER 1 announced that it has deployed Nimsoft Unified Manager to provide its customers wth monitoring capabilities.

The partner award comes as PEER 1 enhanced its SMART Partner Program by moving away from a four-tier revenue commitment model to a two-tier performance-based model. The new program requires no minimum monthly requirement and offers referral partners a monthly commission for the life of the original contract.

Awards can be a way for web hosts to acknowledge successful partners, especially as affiliate programs are a major source of revenue for many hosting providers. Magento has referred more than any other partner in recurring revenue, according to the press release.

Magento was acquired by eBay in June 2011 to bolster its open commerce platform, X.Commerce.

PEER 1 says it has collaborated closely with Magento for the last two years to create solutions for its ecommerce clients. In the fall, the partners began offering online retailers an optimized managed hosting solution designed to improve the performance and reliability of Magento-based storefronts.

“Magento embodies what being a partner means in every sense,” Jose Santos, director, alliance and partner programs, PEER 1 Hosting said in a statement. “They work with us to ensure our joint customers are receiving the very best service and performance from their solutions.”

PEER 1’s newly formed Partner Evaluation Committee, comprised of three senior executives and five partner relations team members, selected Magento as the recipient of the award.

The committee looked at various criteria to select a winner, including highest number of customer referrals. Magento received the award for its commitment to customer service, the access of its ecosystem and its global reach.

“This award represents the intersection of huge growth in eCommerce, demand for the Magento platform and need for a trusted hosting partner,” Bob Schwartz, president, Magento said in a statement. “Our merchants trust us to design software that gives their customers the best online shopping experience and we trust PEER 1 Hosting to keep our joint clients’ websites running on a strong network with top-notch support.”

PEER 1 is a gold sponsor of the upcoming Magento Imagine Conference held from April 23 to 25, 2012 in Las Vegas.
