Eco-Friendly Web Host 1&1 Unveils New "Green Hosting" Logo

1&1's new logo alerts visitors to a website's green credentials.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web host 1&1 Internet (www.1and1.co.uk) has introduced a logo that its customers can use to make visitors aware that their website is eco-friendly. This form of branding is especially attractive given that a recent study released by 1&1 found that half of British shoppers now look for “green” credentials when choosing online retailers.

According to its Monday announcement, 1&1 is encouraging customers to join its green movement by using the logo on their website to show their commitment to lowering their environmental impact from their technical infrastructure upwards. The “Green Hosting Logo” can be downloaded from the Marketing Tools section of the 1&1 Customer Control Panel.

Last month, 1&1 released a survey of 1,500 consumers of whom 59 percent said they would be more likely to buy if a retailer uses eco-friendly practices such as recycling and using renewable energy, and 37 percent now expect online shops to reduce their environmental impact to the same degree as brick-and-mortar stores.

The data also revealed that one in four consumers now expect retailers to use eco-friendly services across their operation along with recycling and reducing physical waste. Also, the use of renewable electricity to power their website is viewed as important as using less polluting vehicles.

1&1 has supplied all its European data centers with electrical power from renewable sources since December 2007. In 2008 its data center in Lenexa, Kansas, also became fully green-certified. 1&1′s green-hosting efforts offset emissions of over 30,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The company currently holds over 9 million customer contracts and manages over 10 million domain names. With all of its worldwide data centers powered by green energy, 1&1 is the first globally green web host of its kind in the market.
