(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Online auctioneer eBay (www.ebay.com) announced this week via its blog that its flagship data center in Salt Lake City, Utah has received LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council, according to a report by Datacenter Dynamics.
The company opened the $287 million data center in May. As the company’s first data center built from the ground up, the facility is used to host the eBay.com and Paypal.com websites.
The LEED Gold certification recognizes the sustainability features eBay used in the design and the construction of its new Topez data center.
In the blog post, eBay senior director of global data center strategy Dean Nelson writes that eBay’s data centers comprise of more than 50 percent of its global power usage which makes “economical and ecological efficiency… a must”.
The data center is part of the company’s initiative to consolidate its many colocation data centers around the world.
The facility offers a range of green features, such as collecting rainwater to offset water usage, a chemical-free water-treatment system and free cooling techniques.
Additionally, more than 20 percent of materials used in the building’s construction was recycled and taken from sources in the surrounding region.
The heating and ventilation system for office space was designed in compliance with best practices.
The company is also testing out renewable energy at its data centers with the installation of a 100kW solar-energy array at its data center in Denver, Colorado.
