November 22, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet service provider EarthLink (earthlink.net) announced on Tuesday that CEO Garry Betty will be taking a medical leave of absence after being diagnosed Monday with a serious form of cancer. Mike Lunsford, an executive VP who leads the company’s voice and access business unit, will act as the interim CEO and immediately assume Betty’s daily responsibilities.
Previously, Lunsford managed 70 percent of EarthLink’s revenue and 1,200 employees. Joining EarthLink in 1999, Lunsford is credited with supervising the introduction of the company’s broadband service, the company said in a statement. Betty has been leading EarthLink’s incursion into citywide wi-fi contracts.
“Garry is a fierce competitor and has the determination to beat this disease,” EarthLink founder and Helio CEO Sky Dayton said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his wife and his family.”
Robert Kavner, chairman of EarthLink’s board of directors, also expressed in a statement he is confident in Lunsford’s leadership abilities during Betty’s leave.
