Dyn Inc. Announces "DNS is Sexy" Campaign to Drive Mainstream DNS Awareness

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In an effort to popularize Domain Name System services as mainstream technologies, managed DNS provider Dynamic Network Services Inc. (www.dyn.com) has launched a new effort to spotlight the DNS industry in the form of its “DNS is Sexy” (www.dnsissexy.com) campaign — something that those in the web hosting industry have known for ages — but has historically remained entirely behind the scenes.

DNS is a hierarchical naming system for any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. While not obvious to everyone using online devices, DNS importantly serves as the Internet’s phone book, translating human-friendly hostnames (such as www.thewhir.com) into a numerical IP address (such as 209.212.149.80). Recent advancements have enabled organizations to use DNS technology to hasten, direct and balance Web traffic.

In order to communicate its message that DNS technology is important and encourage other DNS providers to get involved to promote awareness around its mission critical functionality, Dyn launched DNS is Sexy to make the technology less intimidating by “putting a fun spin on this extremely technical industry,” according to its announcement this week.

“Just because this is an extremely specialized, technical and back-end focused industry, doesn’t mean we have to take ourselves too seriously,” Dyn chief executive officer Jeremy Hitchcock said in a statement. “We’ve been working to improve and innovate this technology for a long time, and we absolutely believe that making things work better, faster and more securely is sexy.”

Dyn sales and marketing vice president Kyle York said his company constantly works to improve the technology behind its services by working closely with some of the best brands on the Web, however, this is not always visible. “While we are happy to be behind the scenes powering DNS infrastructure for our clients, we also think it’s important to make DNS a household name so that everyone can relate to its importance and understand their daily dealings with it,” he said in a statement.

DNS is Sexy was first unveiled at South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, TX, and Dyn is taking their message on the road with a strong line up of industry events and speaking opportunities including the upcoming Interop Las Vegas, Ad Tech San Francisco, Web 2.0 Expo, Velocity, CloudCamp Events, the Mashable Media Summit, and a DNS industry insiders event called “Inside Baseball,” hosted at Dyn’s offices in Manchester, NH.
