Dupont Fabros Resumes Santa Clara Data Center Build

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center real estate investment trust DuPont Fabros (www.dft.com) announced on Friday it has resumed construction on its 360,000 square-foot data center project in Santa Clara, nearly two years after putting the project on hold, according to a report by Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal.

The company began construction on the Reed Street data center in August 2008, but temporarily suspended the build in October 2008 after it was unable to obtain sufficient financing in the midst of the recession.

In June, DFT began the first phase of the facility, which spans 180,000 square feet in data center space.

More than 100 construction workers are assigned to the project, which represents a $230 million to $260 million investment for DFT, according to the company’s second quarter report.

DFT spokesperson Chris Warnke said the company raised $305 million for the project by selling off 13.8 million shares earlier this year.

Construction on phase two of the data center will be based on the amount of customer demand for phase one of the facility.

The first phase is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2011.

Earlier this year, DFT also resumed construction on its NJ1 data center project in New Jersey.

Like the Santa Clara project, NJ1 was forced to postpone construction last November in order to secure adequate financing.
