(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Corporate and Internet gateway data center operator Digital Realty Trust (www.digitalrealtytrust.com) has signed a major lease with Eircom (www.eircom.net), Ireland’s largest telecommunications supplier for a new, ground up data center to total approximately 11,500 square meters (124,500 square feet) in Dublin, Ireland.
According to the company’s Wednesday announcement, this custom data center will be the latest example of Digital Realty Trust’s leadership in energy efficient and environmentally friendly data center facilities. Featuring energy efficient design elements and operational processes, this new facility in the Dublin borough of Clonshaugh will set new best practices standards for green data centers in Europe.
“Business has changed – customers today are far more reliant on their IT systems and their company network to perform vital functions,” Eircom retail managing director Cathal Magee said in a statement. “Plus, the ICT skills shortage continues to be challenging. The new Eircom managed services data center tackles both these realities at once – customers get the ideal environment for their critical systems, as well as access to high-value technical specialists who are skilled at managing the hardware and software that businesses require.
Magee said that data centers like the Clonshaugh facility are necessary for Ireland to stay competive in the knowledge-based economy. Digital Realty Trust Europe senior vice president Bernard Geoghegan agreed, stating “Given today’s challenging economic climate, and the need to focus on core business activity the Irish market is seeing an expanding demand for data center space and associated support.”
Also important in this project is Digital Realty Trust’s committment to environmental practices. “Our energy efficient design makes the Eircom facility a preferred infrastructure solution for managed services and hosting customers,” Geoghegan said.
Digital Realty Trust has lead the industry in a number of green data center “firsts,” having built the first LEED Gold certified data center. It was also the first company to report PUE energy efficiency data about its data centers and the first real estate company to contribute as a member of The Green Grid (www.thegreengrid.org).
Having built custom data centers for numerous global companies, from telcos to financial services companies, Digital Realty Trust manages all build-to-suit data center projects using its “gating process” that ensures delivery of custom data center projects through the timely, efficient coordination of all design and construction processes. The gating process provides clients with transparency and allows for customer input at key stages of the project, ensuring that the finished data center supports the specific needs of each organisation.
