(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center operator Digital Realty Trust (www.digitalrealtytrust.com) announced on Wednesday it has earned LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org) for its 1525 Comstock data center property in Santa Clara.
Digital Realty Trust acquired the 1525 Comstock data center property in September, along with 444 Toyama Drive facility in Sunnyvale, for $44.3 million.
This is the second LEED Platinum certification that Digital Realty Trust has earned for its properties in Santa Clara. The company previous gained LEED Platinum certification for another Santa Clara facility last October.
The company now has eight LEED-certified facilities in the United States, as well as 12 additional facilities currently going through the LEED certification process.
Digital Realty Trust also earned the first BREEAM Excellent environment rating in the data center industry for one of its facilities in the United Kingdom.
“Most data center companies approach being green by focusing on issues such as PUE,” says Jim Smith, CTO of Digital Realty Trust. “Digital Realty Trust takes a more comprehensive approach by ensuring the sustainability of construction practices, the re-use of existing buildings and energy efficient design principles to complement our facilities’ low PUE ratings.”
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by evaluating performance in five key areas of human and environmental health, including sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
