DotNetPanel Codebase Revised, Posted As Open Source On SourceForge.NET

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — SMB SAAS Systems Inc., the software developer behind feature-rich Windows hosting control panel DotNetPanel, has revised the DotNetPanel codebase, and posted the new code as an open source project on applications and software directory SourceForge.NET (www.sourceforge.net) under the name “WebsitePanel“.

According to the company’s announcement this week, WebsitePanel does not require any paid licenses, and is available under a free BSD license. During the transition period, free community support via email and forums will be available to all customers. DotNetPanel chief executive officer Feodor Fitsner said that as a line-of-business application, the benefits of an open source development model, which provides more agile and flexible, was the best way to meet the needs of the web hosting community.

“This will enable the hosting and development community to directly contribute to the future of the project, ensuring WebsitePanel’s continued development as an affordable and scalable control panel for Microsoft Windows hosting,” Fitsner wrote in a message to the DotNetPanel community. “With this change, software developers and hosting providers can now easily integrate WebsitePanel directly into their own offerings and extend the functionality and features to meet their customers’ Windows hosting needs.”

Future new versions and product updates including enterprise modules and bug fixes will be available at no cost to all customers via the WebsitePanel open source project. Showing that this platform has been in continuing development, last month, DotNetPanel added a new Exchange 2010 module allowing hosting companies and Internet service providers to offer Hosted Exchange 2007 and 2010 services to customers all within one control panel. SMB SAAS Systems hopes that its new open source development model will provide similarly fast or faster updates.
