(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — DNS solution provider Nominum (www.nominum.com) announced Tuesday its partnership with non-profit organization StopBadware (www.stopbadware.org) and launched its new SKYE Network Protection Services.
StopBadware works to stop viruses, spyware, and other badware with the support of Google (www.google.com), PayPal (www.paypal.com), Mozilla (www.mozilla.com) and now Nominum.
“StopBadware has a track record of helping companies effectively and responsibly protect consumers from badware,” said Nominum chairman and chief scientist Paul Mockapetris, who joined the StopBadware Board of Directors last month. “This aligns with Nominum’s goal of using our advanced technology and market leadership to make the Internet safer for everyone.”
Starting out as a project of Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, StopBadware has been an independent non-profit organization since January 2010.
Nominum will use StopBadware’s independent review process as another check on the validity of websites labeled “confirmed bad” in Nominum’s system.
“Nominum can make a major contribution toward protecting users from badware,” said executive director of StopBadware Maxim Weinstein. “This carries with it an obligation to ensure that legitimate domains are not impacted. Nominum recognizes and embraces its responsibility to get things right, and we look forward to sharing our experience to help make that possible.”
According to the press release, this partnership will provide website owners with a transparent method to get their sites reviewed.
To ensure Nominum and its customers are only blocking domains which are active threats to ISPs’ users, the review process is independent.
Nominum’s SKYE Network Protection Services provides users with a real-time feed of bot-related malicious domains that can be used to monitor and mitigate the impact of botnets on their network.
A single botnet can use nearly 20 times more DNS capacity than a normal end user, according to Nominum research.
“With our threat data and algorithms we can easily observe the impact of botnets. We’ve seen bots on the attack, instantly spiking DNS bandwidth consumption, and identified squadrons of bot-infected devices,” said chief technology officer at Nominum Gopala Tumuluri. “Network owners can act on this information and sever connections to botnet command and control resources to improve the resistance of their DNS, the health of their network, and the overall end user experience.”
Supported by Nominum’s research team of network and security experts, the constant data flow is leveraged from the company’s global network and proprietary algorithms. The threat data is used by Nominum Vantio Intelligent DNS Systems to stop botnet command and control activities.
Deployment of SKYE NPS does not require any change to the network infrastructure. It does not need access to equipment like routers to update information.
Nominum sponsored a WHIR Webinar in September, featuring Paul Mockapetris and VP of network operations, Paul Evanson. An archive of the Nominum webinar is available in the webinars section of the WHIR website.
