(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The third data center track session of day three of HostingCon 2010 was delivered by a panel of data center experts, which was comprised of SoftLayer’s Sam Fleitman, DH Capital’s Daniel Golding, and CyrusOne’s David Ferdman, while Digital Realty Trust’s Dan Ephraim acted as the moderator.
Entitled “Disruptive Strategies and Technologies: Avoid Them or Lose Ground”, the presentation discussed how hosting providers can effectively decide whether it is more beneficial to own a facility or lease a facility.
Ephraim posed the first question of the session, where he asked both Fleitman and Ferdman “why the hell would a hoster build a data center”?
Ferdman was first to reply by stating that it made sense for CyrusOne to construct its own data centers because “at the end of the day [they] want to put [their] capital to work, and [they] want a greater return on capital.”
Fleitman and Ferdman seemed to agree that there are both advantages to leasing data centers as well as owning them, which calls for a combination of deploying the two options.
When the question of whether hosting providers should establish partnerships for colocation purposes came up, Golding said that he was opposed to this idea because he would always have the lingering feeling of “eating the other guy’s lunch”.
Later, the discussion shifted to the secrets of achieving success, in which Fredman, Fleitman and Golding all agreed that creating a positive company culture by treating employees well and ensuring they are well-compensated is absolutely crucial.
