February 17, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Digital Envoy (digitalenvoy.net), a provider of IP solutions, announced this week that it has become a corporate sponsor of the Anti-Phishing Working Group (antiphishing.org), an industry association dedicated to the elimination of identity theft and fraud related to phishing scams.
Phishing attacks involve the mass distribution of “spoofed” or forged email messages with return addresses, links, and branding which appear to come from legitimate financial institutions but are designed to lead recipients towards fraudulent Web sites that attempt to trick them into divulging personal data such as account usernames, passwords, credit card numbers and social security numbers.
“The Anti-Phishing Working Group is proud and honored to have Digital Envoy as a new sponsoring member,” says Peter Cassidy, secretary general of the APWG. “The company’s success with leveraging the information contained in IP addresses for forensic intelligence and the real-time prevention of attacks can help give us all new insight about how the Internet anonymity cloud can be instrumented and understood. We all look forward to working with the company to thwart and finally arrest the phishing threat.”
According to the APWG, there were 9,000 phishing emails in December 2004. The organization says phishing attacks are not only rising in frequency, but have become increasingly malicious and sophisticated.
