March 1, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Digital Envoy (digitalenvoy.net) has announced theavailability of its RealPath intelligent routing technology allowing instantInternet traffic management decisions to be made for global load balancingor content distribution network applications, based on the analysis ofnetwork topology and city-level geographic location.
RealPath, which is covered in seven separate patent filings, wasspecifically designed for incorporation into content networking switches andappliances to enable quickest-path routing decisions based on topology, aswell as to allow for content targeting and restriction based on thegeographic location of an Internet user.
RealPath allows enterprises to increase network performance and enhancetraffic management while optimizing bandwidth and decreasing processingcosts, the company says. With real-time measurement and analysis, routingdecisions can be made up to 500 times faster. Current infrastructuretechnologies usually make decisions based on fewest-hop analysis and probingtechniques, whereas RealPath’s topological view enables companies to moreeffectively route and balance Web traffic with real-time decisions, as wellas serve and restrict content.
According to Rob Batchelder, research director with Gartner Group, geographic traffic management is pushing the networking technology envelopebecause it brings a new dimension to how content is individualized anddelivered.
“Ideally, the optimum approach to content delivery is to analyze thecharacteristics of the network from the core to the edge and dynamicallyalter not only how, but what content is delivered. The more refined thatanalysis is, the more efficient and personalized that delivery can be,” saidBatchelder. “Increasing the ‘IQ’ of a network, not only injects new levelsof relevance to content, but enables better routing, storage, placement and, ultimately, end-user experience.”
Companies including Digital Island, AOL Time Warner, WilliamsCommunications, Siemens and Coyote Point are already using RealPath ininfrastructure applications including global load balancing and trafficmanagement, content distribution and intelligent caching, and contentlocalization , which allows enterprises to automatically serve language- andcurrency-specific content and products.
