Dell Servers Power Growing Online Game

August 25, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report by ServerWatch, Mythic Entertainment is using combined clusters of hundreds of Linux-based Dell (dell.com) machines to power its game Dark Age of Camelot, which Mythic Entertainment says is the fastest growing online role-playing game.

Mythic Entertainment has standardized on 2U PowerEdge 2650s and the 1U PowerEdge 1750. The company has deployed hundreds of Dell servers in the US and in game hosting locations in France and South Korea. The company, according to the report, has ordered 40 Xeon-based PowerEdge 1850s, scheduled to begin shipping by October.

Mythic Entertainment does not deploy Dell’s pre-packaged Linux systems, preferring to use a customized version of Red Hat Linux.

Rob Denton, COO of Mythic Entertainment, said in the report that the company began searching for a hardware vendor four years ago. It decided against more expensive systems from HP and Sun because it didn’t want to pay licensing fees for the operating system. Dell won out over Gateway, because of its price-performance ratio and good track record, Denton said.

Mythic Entertainment’s games connect client software, purchased by game players, to a Linux back end, where players interact with each other online. The games commonly have between 30,000 and 40,000 players online simultaneously.
