According to a Dell whitepaper, grouping multiple Dell EqualLogic PS Series arrays helps increase capacity and performance
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — IT giant Dell (www.dell.com) announced on Monday that it has launched its new Dell EqualLogic storage solutions. In the same press release, Dell released details of new integration of its storage portfolio with the VMware vSphere 5 virtualization and cloud platform.
On Thursday, August 25, Dell and the WHIR will host a webinar about its OpenStack Cloud Solution and the Dell Crowbar, a software designed to accelerate the adoption of the platform. Sign up for “Prying Open the Cloud with Dell Crowbar and OpenStack” and read more about the webinar here.
According to the press release, the new storage solutions mark the continued evolution of Dell Fluid Data Solutions, designed to help customers manage information in virtualized data centers.
Dell introduced the EqualLogic PS6100 and PS4100 series of virtualized, IP-based storage offerings. Along with new Dell EqualLogic firmware version 5.1, Dell offers its next generation of storage solutions that integrate in existing environments, according to the press release.
“The new EqualLogic capabilities mark a significant next step in the evolution of the Dell Fluid Data architecture and extend Dell’s leadership in virtualized IP-based storage solutions that are easy to manage,” Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager, Dell Enterprise Storage said in a statement. “The new storage arrays and virtualization tools can help our customers run highly optimized and efficient data centers by automating configuration and improving performance without forcing forklift upgrades.”
According to Dell, the 2.5-inch drive support for the product line will provide greater density. Dell says customers can gain up to 60 percent performance improvement on workloads with the EqualLogic PS Series, compared with the previous version.
The EqualLogic PS series, according to Dell, works together with other storage arrays, regardless of generation, to automatically manage data, load balance across all resources and expand to meet growing storage needs.
Dell says it doesn’t require customers to rip and replace storage environments during each upgrade cycle as other vendors might.
The latest EqualLogic firmware version 5.11 includes thin provisioning awareness for VMware vSphere to help users save recovery time and mitigate the risk of data loss.
Dell says it is one of VMware’s largest global resellers. VMware group manager, product marketing for VMware Mike Adams discussed the features of vSphere 5 in an email interview with the WHIR.
To support its upcoming launch, Dell released a new set of VMware specific enhancements for Dell EqualLogic, Dell Compellent and Dell PowerVault customers. Dell says these will be rolled out through Q3 and Q4. These include: Dell EqualLogic host integration tools for VMware 3.1, Dell Compellent storage replication adapter for VMware vCenter site recovery manager 5 and Dell PowerVault integration with VMware vSphere 5.
“VMware and Dell have proven time and time again that the integration of storage infrastructures and virtual environments can have a dramatic impact on a customer’s ability to increase flexibility while streamlining IT management,” Narayan Venkat, vice president, product management, storage, VMware said in a statement. “Our joint engineering efforts to integrate Dell storage solutions with the VMware platform continue to help customers grow their environments, meet business needs, and more efficiently manage business requirements without adding complexity or cost.”
