June 25, 2001 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Hardware manufacturer Dell and infrastructure software developer Inktomi Corp., announced on Monday that they had formed a relationship intended to offer Inktomi’s industry-leading scalable infrastructure software on Dell’s award-winning PowerEdge servers.
Available immediately, the hardware and software combination will be offered to U.S. customers as caching appliances to help reduce bandwidth costs, increase availability on critical Web servers and improve the Web experience for end-users by accelerating content delivery. Dell’s PowerApp.cache Inktomi Powered server, built on Inktomi?s Traffic Server Engine and Dell’s PowerEdge 1550 and PowerEdge 2550, are designed to provide large telecommunications companies, xSPs, Web hosting companies, and enterprises of all sizes with a caching solution that is easy to install, deploy and manage.
To ease the installation of the new appliances, customers can take advantage of Dell OpenManage Kick-Start Utility, a simple network configuration tool that can be run from any machine with a Java-enabled browser. This utility allows the user to input basic network information, such as loading of the IP address, naming of the host and gateway, subnet address assignment and initial cache configuration. Additionally, Dell customers can choose Premier Enterprise Services, which include support, consulting and deployment services to help them more efficiently build and maintain their IT infrastructures.
